Uncertainty around election makes for choppy market

Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 share index had a relatively flat day today, losing 0.1% despite rather choppy market conditions. The ASX hit a 5986 low around midday, briefly recovered and reached green territory however ultimately ended the session of trading down.

The banks all ended down today with our largest bank, Commonwealth Bank (CBA) being hurt the most, down 2.02%. The miners also suffered with BHP and Rio Tinto (RIO) both down for the day.

Afterpay (APT) was one of the few to buck the trend, breaking back over $100 and up a total of 1.63% for the session.

The biggest gainers on Wednesday were:

  • Nanosonics +12.5%
  • Megaport +6.6%
  • Flight Centre +6.1%
  • Nearmap +5.6%
  • Webjet +5%

The biggest declines were:

  • Pendal Group -8%
  • Fortescue Metals -4.6%
  • Whitehaven Coal -3.7%
  • St Barbara -3.3%
  • Cooper Energy -3.2%
