News of Pfizer vaccine causes 0.7% uptick

The ASX200 was up 0.7% today (to 6340.50 points) as news of an effective vaccine by Pfizer was released. While this still seems a while away until it is distributed to the general population, this has instilled some confidence in investors as the market continues to build. 

The banks didn’t look back today as the financial sector posted some huge daily gains with National Australia Bank (NAB) up 7.59% while Westpac (WBC) and ANZ were both up over 5%.

It was a day for Afterpay (APT) investors to forget with the stock down 10.86% on close.

  • Oil Search +16.60%
  • Fletcher Building +16.5%
  • Virgin Money UK +16%
  • Beach Energy +14.8%

The biggest declines were:

  • NEXTDC -13.9%
  • Ramelius -13.3%
  • ARB Corp -12.8%
  • Fisher and Paykel -12.1%
  • Eagers Automotive -11.8%
